Sedation Dentistry Naples / Marco Island

For many people, dental anxiety is a major reason for not seeking the dental work that they need, in many cases, desperate definitive care is needed. If you count yourself among the millions of dental phobics in the United States, we certainly understand. Whether you have had a bad dental experience in the past or are simply fearful of the sights, sounds, and sensations associated with regular dentistry, the practice of Brad Engle, D.M.D, M.H.S., welcomes you. The sedation dentistry options are available at our Naples and Marco Island area office which may allow you to reduce multiple dental procedures into a single appointment. Sedation Dentistry is effective to reduce and virtually eliminate anxiety and discomfort during and after the procedure. In fact, the memories of your dental experience are likely to be reduced up to 90%.

Sedation dentistry allows you to undergoing years’ worth of complex dental work while feeling significantly more relaxed. It is used to alleviate fear and discomfort during general, cosmetic or surgical dentistry procedures. Benzodiazepines and narcotics are safe medications that soothe patients’ anxieties and make them feel completely at ease. These drugs can be administered either orally or through an Intravenous setup. Dr. Bradley Engle is credentialed by the State of Florida to provide just the right amount of relaxation necessary for patients to undergo their dental treatments. He is certified to provide parental conscious sedation and has your best interests at heart while facilitating a comfortable and stress-free dental experience.

If you have avoided going to the dentist due to overwhelming anxiety, sedation dentistry can make your visits more manageable. With the help of sedation techniques, extensive dental procedures can often be performed with a reduced number of appointments and oftentimes can be completed in a single session. Patients with sensitive teeth, gums, or gag reflexes or other health issues will also benefit from sedation therapy (both oral and IV sedation techniques).

IV Sedation

Known as 'conscious sedation', IV sedation is a safe and effective treatment for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. Certified by the Florida Board of Dental Examiners as a conscious sedation dentist, Dr. Bradley Engle can create a relaxed environment during your procedure. With Parental concsious sedation, he can administer an anti-anxiety medication (Benzodiazepine) directly into the bloodstream. The sedation effect is almost immediate and enables you to remain comfortable and relaxed during your entire dental treatment. This also allows our doctors to combine general dental procedures and oral surgical procedures into a single appointment. During IV sedation, you will remain conscious and responsive to your surroundings. However, you will have some amnestic effects which reduce the awareness of the dental procedures being administered. If during the procedure, you require additional medicines our team can quickly administer more medication. This is one of the main befefits of IV sedation vs the use of oral drugs for sedation. The overall result is reduced anxiety with little or no memory of your treatment afterwards.

If anxiety over dental procedures is getting in the way of your seeking dental treatment, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Contact Bradley Engle DMD, MHS at his Naples or Marco Island offices area dental practice to learn how you can lessen your fear of visiting the dentist through different dental sedation techniques.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is another method used to achieve minimal "conscious sedation" and can be prescribed for many types of dental work, from a routine check-up to cosmetic procedures. It can also help patients who have a hard-to-control gag reflex or tooth sensitivity, as well as those who are resistant to numbing medications. Depending on your level of stress, Dr. Engle can administer an anti-anxiety pill, or “oral conscious sedative,” on the day of your visit, generally an hour before you are scheduled to undergo a procedure (so you will need to plan on having someone drive you to and from your appointment). The sedative will put you in a state of deeper relaxation. Although you will not be asleep, you will be mostly unaware of the dental treatments being performed, and will experience an amnestic-like quality that reduces your memory of the treatment. Our Dentists can then focus on completing their recommended procedures, potentially reducing the amount of dental visits you’ll need to make.

At our practice of Engle Dentistry, we welcome fearful and anxious patients of all adult ages. To find out whether you are a suitable candidate for oral or IV sedation dentistry, please schedule a consultation appointment at either our Naples or Marco Island offices.
