Dental crowns are recommended for teeth that have a history of decay or trauma. A dental bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth when a dental implant is not indicated or desired. A bridge requires the preparation of adjacent teeth for crowns but incorporates (connects) the missing tooth (pontic) into the final restoration at the laboratory. Bridges can be offered only when there are natural teeth (or implants in select cases) on either side of the missing space.
At your consultation, all of your treatment options will be discussed. If you are missing teeth or need to have teeth removed, your dentist will discuss the pros and cons of both dental implants and bridges. It is essential that you understand ALL of your options prior to deciding on a specific dental treatment.
Working with only select dental laboratories, our doctors are able to provide a very high quality and esthetically pleasing final restoration. For our Smile Design cases, our local laboratory technician will provide custom shading and matching of the shapes and sizes of your teeth. This extra step ensures a superior quality final restoration that matches colors, shapes and sizes with your other teeth.
Dental crowns and bridges are highly successful. National averages for these restorations can provide up to ten years of function (versus a greater than 90% success rate or a 15-year success rate on a dental implant). However, bridges and crowns can be highly effective in replacing missing teeth, covering large restorations and helping prevent any additional breakdown of a tooth. If you have dental insurance, be sure to speak with our staff to determine if any potential reimbursements are applicable.
